BER Performance Evaluation for CPFSK Phase and Polarization Diversity Coherent Optical Receivers

چکیده

The following methods of CPFSK signals demodulation are compared for phase and polarization diversity receivers: single filter, dual filter, delay and multiply. BER values are obtained in each case showing that for negligible laser linewidths the delay demodulation method outperforms the dual-filter method by approximately 3 dB, and the single-filter method by 6 dB. Since the noise bandwidth for MSK and delay demodulation is approximately twice as small as for the other methods, one should add another 3 dB to get the gain for that modulation/demodulation method. The influences of nonzero laser linewidth, noise correlation, and non-Gaussian character of the probability density functions of the noise at the sampler have been taken into account.

Performance Evaluation of Optically Preamplified M -

M -ary pulse position modulation (M -ary PPM) has been widely considered as an attractive solution for increasing the bit rates in free-space optical (FSO) communications. Besides increasing the bit rate, M -ary PPM increases the power efficiency of FSO systems. Hence, better performance can be achieved at lower Eb/N0 values when compared to on-off keying (OOK). M -ary PPM systems can be implem...

OFDM in Optical Long-Haul Transmission

In this paper we review two OFDM based architectures, which have recently been proposed for optical long-haul transmission. The BER performance is investigated in presence of chromatic dispersion and differential group delay. In a further step both architectures are extended to polarization diversity receivers. Improvement is achieved by diversity combining at the expense of increased complexity.

Gaussian Approximation of the BER for Non-Coherent Optical Fiber CDMA Networks Using Sparse Codes

An analysis based on a Gaussian approximation of the BER performance for noncoherent optical fiber code-division multiple-access (CDMA) networks (both asynchronous and synchronous) is presented. The effects of shot noise, thermal noise, interference and the architecture of optical receivers are included in the evaluation of the BER. A general equation for the BER is established and it is shown ...

Coherent Optical Communications: Historical Perspectives and Future Directions

Coherent optical fiber communications were studied extensively in the 1980s mainly because high sensitivity of coherent receivers could elongate the unrepeated transmission distance; however, their research and development have been interrupted for nearly 20 years behind the rapid progress in high-capacity wavelength-division multiplexed (WDM) systems using erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs)...

Digital Coherent Receivers and Advanced Optical Modulation Formats in 100 and 200 Gb/s DWDM Systems

Recent advances in coherent optical receivers is reviewed. Digital-Signal-Processing (DSP) based phase and polarization management techniques make coherent detection robust and feasible. With coherent detection, the complex field of the received optical signal is fully recovered, allowing compensation of linear and nonlinear optical impairments including chromatic dispersion (CD) and polarizati...
